Sarah Burgoyne : WHAT IS LOST CANNOT BE HAD

dew is her ornament

on the spider web
it descends

at a slow galactic pace
like this,
             the web is time's magnet

where all small planets alight
  quietly
like a thousand years

slinging thin lines
into heavy pearl curves

each year is an eye
the eye of the sea

finally looking back
now
          to say

as you do
                     when you look
many-eyed, and as close:

yes, i am the prince of grass.

Sarah Burgoyne's first collection Saint Twin (Mansfield: 2016) was nominated for the A.M. Klein prize. Her next book is coming out with Coach House Press in 2021.
